E. Jane

Untitled (Home #1) (2021)

Digital Image (.TIFF)
7 x 5 Inches, 300dpi
Edition 1 + 1 AP

Untitled (Home #1) is the first in a new digital drawing series by E. Jane. Meditating on the song ‘Home’ from Charlie Smalls’ 1974 musical The Wiz, the drawings utilize visual representations of the lyrics as the central compositional element. Since 2018, E. Jane has been studying the song, which has been performed by Stephanie Mills on Broadway, Diana Ross in the major motion picture, and Whitney Houston during her television debut on the Merv Griffin show. Through her performance persona MHYSA, E. Jane is working to update and perform the song in the iconic Black Diva ballad tradition that earned ‘Home’ it’s place in history.

E. Jane is an Interdisciplinary artist and musician based in Brooklyn, New York. Inspired by Black liberation and womanist praxis, their work incorporates digital images, video, text, performance, sculpture, installation, and sound design. E. Jane’s work explores safety and futurity as it relates to Black femmes, as well as how Black femmes navigate/negotiate space in popular culture and networked media. Since 2016, Jane has been developing the performance persona, MHYSA, an underground popstar for the cyber resistance.
