Twenty Purrls (2021)

Twenty Purrls is a composite, digitally-processed painting that collapses distinct materialities to create a chimeric art object. Multiple detail shots taken at different times of Shavers site-responsive action painting, Rose Mount Rose (2021), have been compressed into a final image through an intuitive process of Risograph color separation, Photoshop editing, and camera manipulation. Rose Mount Rose is part of a larger series of paintings inspired in part by the DIY maximalist cake trend, icons & popular culture symbols of the past and present.

Sydney Shavers is an artist who assesses systems of prescriptive identification through the language of viral media. Her videos and installations provide a glitch into the understanding of sexuality as well as digital pop culture to create a potential for new meaning. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as Chicago Art Department and Ikattha Space in Mumbai. She lives and works in New York City.
