The Rebreather (2020)

3D Model and AR Filter
Edition 1 + 1 AP

Chant: “To breathe is to exchange with the environment, is to connect with our ancestors, is to re-breathe the air they breathed.”

The Rebreather is part of a mythical ritual for casting breath-spells. Shown as a 3D model on the web, it brings the viewer’s focus to breathing through the movement of pore extensions on the face. The pore tentacles are inspired by the facial tattoo patterns of the women from The Derung People (独龙族), one of the smallest ethnic groups in China. Just as the Derung women use facial augmentation to communicate with the land and the past, The Rebreather asks: How far does your breath travel over time? Can you feel the breath of your ancestors in your own?

Qianqian Ye (Q) is an artist, designer and organizer based in Los Angeles. She was born and raised in China and moved to the US in 2012. Trained as an architect, she explores the complex relationship between digital, spatial, and social justice at the intersections of gender, race, and ethnicity. Her current practice focuses on alternative community building, technology against misinformation, the Chinese language system, and re-imagining gender in a non-western narrative.
